story

Jack JOHNSON: 1878 - 1946 : "First Afro-american world champion of heavyweights"

Famous personality of his time, Jack Johnson was the first black to become heavyweights world champion in boxing. Loved or hated, everybody knew him, as a talented boxer as well as for his behaviour outside the ring. He was born in 1878 in Galveston, Texas. After a fews in primary school, he began earning his life doing diferents jobs, and worked as docker. Therefore, he was renowned for boxing and at 18, he was already really respected. In 1897, he married Mary Austin and kept improving in boxing where black people were quite absent. On february 3rd 1903, he won the « Negro Title », a world champion title just for black boxers.

In 1906, Johnson was granted a fight against Bob Fitzsimmons, ex- heavyweights world champion. This fight's result started a clap of thunder in the boxing world as a defeat of Fitzsimmons by K.O was until then, an unseen event.

After this victory, Johnson looked for a new fight, but this time against the world titleholder, James Jeffries. But James refused the fight because Johnson was black, and retired few months later. However, his successor, Tommy Burns, agreed to fight against Jack Johnson on December 26th 1908 in Australia.

Johnson won the fight by K.O becoming heavyweights world champion and the first black crowned in the queen boxing category.
Knowned for loving women and for his "flashy" style, Jack Johnson many boxers disliked him, as well as white spectators who wished to see him severely defeated. When Jeffries under the public's pression and white personnalities, announced in 1910 he came out of his retirement to reconquer his title, many thought Johnson was done. The "racial" aspect was obviously still present as Jeffries declared :

"I am fully aware of what depends on me and I won't disappoint the public. This part of white race who rely on me to defend his supremacy, could be insured that I will do my best. I will win as fast as possible".

"The fight of the century" was held on July 1910 in Reno, Nevada, in front of more than 20 000 spectators. A stadium ahd been built for the occasion while petitions were spread to have the president of th USA as the referee of this fight, but he declined this proposition!

The famous writter Jack London, who had a passion for boxing, wrote chronicles about the fight for many news papers. Unfortunately James Jeffries, who was the "Great Hope" of white people, was beaten by K.O. Johnson who was full of himself, had told Jeffries during the fight "let me see what you've got or do something". He also dared to suggest telegraphists what they should send to papers who would write about the fight. Johnson's victory provocated riots in many US cities where some white people could not stand "the Negro's" victory. The police had to interfere several times to avoid serious consequences. During these incidents, at least 23 black people and 2 white people were killed. The incidents took place in about 25 states and 50 cities.

In some states, the broadcasting of the fight was simply prohibited! By beating Jeffries by a K.O , Jack Johnson had won 60 000 dollars, together with rights for every pictures taken and bonus, which brings his total income for this fight to 120 000 dollars, important amount at this time. In 1912, Johnson's second wife, who was white, commited a suicide. Lonely, she felt despised as well as white people as blacks. Jack Johnson made people gossiping when 3 months later, he married a young 18 years old white lady.

In 1913, Johnson escaped from the US as a fugitive because he risked the prison. The "Mann Act", a law voted to fight against the prostitution, had been modificated to be implemented to him. The "Mann Act" prohibited the transportation of prostitute from a state to an other and as Johnson was seeing a white woman with whom he moved from a state to an other, he was accused of pimping.

He settled in Paris where people will definitely hear about him, as well as in rings as outside during 7 years. Well before rappers, he had an ostentatious style. He arrived in the french capital with 22 suitcases weighing a total of 2 tonnes. He rapidly shew his taste for luxury cars, women (whites), flashy suits, walking sticks with golden pommels and diamonds, and crocodile skin shoes. Knowned as somenone who loves women, Johnson got married 4 times. Except for his childhood love with whom he lived as husband and wife, his 3 other women will be white.

There is no one special indian meal but several various meals. It is not always in restaurants but also in families that you can discover this diversity of food. Most of the population is vegetarian because of a choice, a tradition or just because they have to. Therefore, we can find a huge variety of vegetarian recipes with in particular dry vegetables (twin-lens chickpeas...) because of their protein.

Many meals with sauce are based on spices' mixing. Spices are very important in Family Indian food, it is undeniable: every meal will be inevitably flavoured.

South food is the spiciest. It is more often vegetarian and beside rice, it is made up of various vegeltables and twin-lens. Among Indian spices most appreciated, curry, tamarind, cilantro, ginger, garlic, chili, cinnamon, cloves, cumin, nutmeg, coconut, and more mostly provided by Kerala (South west state).

Unlike some North states where meal is in general served with all kind of bread (naan, paratha, roti, chapati). In South India, rice is their staple diet.

Muslims from Mongolia, invading North India, brought their recipes and their ways of cooking, in particular kebabs and the tandoor cooking or tandoori: naans, tandoori chicken, etc...As well as ingredients from America (chilis, potatoes, tomatos, corn) have been integrated into Indian culinalry habits. Some regional food have also been influenced by countries from previous colonies.

Except for some region of the country, Indians eat with no starter like in France. In some other Indian region (in Pendjab for example) they generaly have Samoussa, Pakoras or vegetable doghnuts, as a snack or during happy hour.

Great movie of 80s, "Life of Rosy " is the one from all films in the Library of African Cinema, which has been proved to be the most popular with African audiences. The film takes us inside the vibrant music scene of Kinshasa, Zaire's exhilarating and exasperating capital of four million. Its back alleys and night clubs pulsate to the beat of some of the most influential music in the world today. "Life of Rosy" tells the "rags to riches" story of a poor rural musician who realizes that to succeed in today's music world, he must go to the city and break into radio and television. In Kinshasa he uses his wit and talent to win a beautiful wife, trick his greedy boss and succeed in singing his "theme song" on national television. This lively farce captures an essential part of contemporary African reality.

an african tale
the tree which wanted to remain bare

Once upon a time, there was a tree in the middle of a orchard, who just came out of the floor, little green growth and fragile among all those huge trees around it. Very curious, it looked very quickly at the world around, flowers who open in the morning and close themselves in the evening, birds who whistled jumping from branch to branche, the country man who used to come early inthe morning to pick fruits...

Aha ! this world around him looked so beautiful, he also wanted to be part of this beauty, find his own place in this harmony.

One year passed and the tree grew, he had stems now. He realised he wasn't a blade of grass like before, but he was a tree now and started to observe with more attention, his elders.

He found them so big, so beautiful, full of leaves; he was so amazed by all these flowers turning into fruits, so touched by cares the small farmer gave them but.., while looking at himself, he realised his bark didn't look like any others and their branches did not have the same shape. So, he got afraid, afraid not to be big enough, beautiful enough. He was afraid not being able to give enough fruit, and afraid the other: apple; pear; or plum trees would not accept him being different. He decided then to produce neither leaf, flower or fruit.

Years passed, every spring, his trunk thickened, got taller and new branches grew but neither leaf, flower or fruit.

In order not to be naked in front of the other, since he was young, he let himself recovered by a climbing ivy, by bindweeds, bunches of mistletoes. He did not even know what to look like so he let himself covered with a beauty that wasn't his.

The gardener planed more than once to cut down this tree to have heating wood, but too busy, he would often decide to do it later. One morning, however, he came, equipped with a big axe, he started cutting the ivy which encircle thightly the tree. There was so much ivy that it took him the whole day and once again, he held over the logging for later. This same night, a small worm stang the bindweed what made it dead straight away and the next day, birds noticing the mistletoe, came pick at it.

There was nothing left but a trunk and branches: There was just the tree in the middle of the orchard.

Suddenly noticing his nudity and ignoring how cover it, he finally decided to let grow all along his branches, beautiful small leaves, to let bloom nice little whit flowers nicely contlrasting with the brown branch and the leaves' green.

The small farmer came back with his axe and discovered a wonderful cherry tree instead of the useless trunk and found no more reason to cut it down. He let him then, too happy about the miracle that just happened.

Until his day, the tree lives happily in the orchard, he's not like the other, neither more beautiful nor bigger, but equally useful. he understood that neither the bark's textre, nor the branches' shape, leaves'shape, the flowers' color matter: only fruits he gives and no else could matter.

Also, every year, in good season, the country man's kids come with a ladder, eat a lot of fruit and delight him with their laughs.

Let's not be afraid of fruits we could give, because no one else could carry them for us. Let's not be afraid of the fruit we could carry.
